Interregional variation in the prevalence of tuberculosis: a study in Madhya Pradesh using multilevel approach

Tuberculosis is one of the major health concerns in India and bigger states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh are above the national prevalence of Tuberculosis. Studies showing state specific models fail to explore the possible inter-regional variations. This study will try to explore the regional variation in the prevalence of tuberculosis and will determine the factors associated with the prevalence of tuberculosis at different levels of hierarchy in Madhya Pradesh. DLHS -2, a nationally representative survey conducted during 2002-04 in India provides us an ample opportunity to see the regional variation within the state. The multilevel approach used in the analysis allows entangling the hierarchal data induced by the sampling design adopted in survey. The preliminary results shows that Central region of Madhya Pradesh has the highest prevalence while Malwa plateau region having lowest prevalence of tuberculosis. And rural-urban differential clearly prevails within the regions. The differentials were highest in the Northern and Vindhya region. Regions, place of residence, SLI, age are expected to emerge as significant predictors of the prevalence of tuberculosis in multilevel analysis.
